Did you happen to hear Bill Harley's entertaining musical performance on a beautiful summer evening at the Westport Town Farm, with our lovely river, green fields, and stone walls as the backdrop? Did you see the exhibition of David Allen's striking photographs of historic town buildings at the Westport Historical Society? Did your school children study real works of art by Monet and Picasso in a visit to the RISD Museum in Providence? Or did they participate in an exciting interactive program to see what colonial life was like here in the 18th century? These and dozens of other programs supported by the Westport Cultural Council have greatly benefited our community.
You may know us. We are a small but enthusiastic group of volunteers appointed by the Board of Selectmen to administer two important grant programs that help make these concerts, exhibitions, and field trips possible.
The Council is part of a network of Local Cultural Councils serving all 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts. The LCC program is the largest grassroots cultural funding network in the nation, supporting thousands of community-based projects in the arts, sciences, and humanities every year.
Our Council also offers grants through the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust. Helen Ellis was a sculptor and dedicated educator who made a significant gift to the town to support local cultural programs.
Together, these two funding programs have made it possible for the Council to award grants to more than 350 artists, historians, musicians, educators, theater groups, naturalists, and others who have helped to make Westport a more vibrant and culturally rich community.
