FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE

The historic Friends Meeting House, built in 1814, replaced the original meeting house which was built in 1716. It is the home of the Westport Friends Meeting and used every Sunday for the weekly Meeting. It is an unusual setting that lends itself to certain types of cultural events that fit with overall contemplative nature of the Meeting House, its layout with the fixed benches, and the natural lighting from the many large windows. For example, some years ago it was successfully used for a unique art exhibit comprised of large translucent fabric hangings that filled all the windows. The natural light filtering through the colored fabric created a stained glass effect.

The Friends Meeting House would work well for a poetry reading or a small musical group, as the acoustics are very good. Contact the Clerk of the Meeting to discuss your ideas and to learn about any restrictions and expenses related to the use of the facility.
