The Local Cultural Council Program (LCC)
The Local Cultural Council Program (LCC) — the second largest grant program of the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) — is a grassroots complement to the agency's centralized grant programs. Allocations are made to all of Massachusetts' 351 cities and towns to support community cultural activities. Each year, the MCC distributes funds to the LCCs; in turn, the LCCs make grants to schools, organizations and individuals within their communities. Distributions to each LCC are based on a local aid formula devised by the state, which takes into account population and tax base. Since funding began in 1984, the MCC has awarded Westport $156,000, enabling funding for approximately 328 programs. The allocation to Westport for 2009-2010 is $4000.
The Helen Ellis Charitable Trust
Helen Ellis, a Westport resident for over 50 years, was an artist and dedicated educator. After her death, the proceeds from her estate were used to establish the Helen Ellis Charitable Trust. This Trust supports Ms. Ellis’ dream of inspiring others to develop their creative talents.
Administered by Bank of America, the Trust provides funding to the Westport Cultural Council for projects that benefit Westport residents. Since the Trust was established in 1992, the Westport Cultural Council has awarded over $195,000 for 182 arts and cultural programs.
