Helen Ellis Charitable Trust

Hellen Ellis carving a piece of wood
Helen Ellis
1889 to 1978

Helen Ellis, an artist and a dedicated educator, was a resident of Westport for over 50 years. Her naturalistic woodcarvings were displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After she died, the proceeds of her estate were used to establish the Helen Ellis Charitable Trust. The Trust supports Ms. Ellis’ dream of inspiring others to develop their creative talents.

Administered by the Fleet Bank in New Bedford, the Trust provides funding for the Westport Arts Council to make awards for projects that benefit Westport residents. Funding from Helen Ellis Charitable Trust to Westport began in 1992. Since then, the Westport Arts Council has awarded over $120,000 for 125 arts and cultural programs that benefit Westport residents.

The timeline for the Helen Ellis Charitable Trust grants is on the How to Apply page.
